Clinical Trials
The Jodha Tishon Clinic provides services and trials for many sleep and psychiatric conditions including insomnia, depression, narcolepsy, Tourette's disorder and ADHD. Patients are recruited from our database, advertisements and referral from physicians. Our experienced staff and team are actively involved and committed to these activities. Our facility further encourages and facilitates research by the future generation of Fellows and Students. Below are a few examples of tests conducted under guidance of the Jodha Tishon Clinic:
Dim Light Melatonin Onset (DLMO) Test
This is a test which measures the level of the hormone melatonin in the body. This hormone assists in determining at what time we fall asleep. Melatonin levels tend to rise in the evening, which is a few hours before one falls asleep. During a DLMO, the participant will be asked to sit in a chair in a dark room for a test duration of six hours. If the participant desires, they are able to bring one accompanying person to sit and chat with them in the dark. The test must be completed in the dark given that the hormone of interest for this test is suppressed by light. During this test, eight (8) saliva samples will be collected, starting at 6:00PM and finishing at 12:00AM. Saliva samples are collected when participants chew on a sterile cotton swab and then subsequently spit into a sterile tube for analysis. On average, it takes one month for the results of a DLMO test to be available.
Actigraphy
This is a non-invasive way of measuring activity and when one is at rest. The actigraphy device is akin to a small wrist watch. The participant will use this device for two weeks to measure their gross motor activity. During the time the device is on the participant, one’s body movement and their rest will be continuously recorded, thus allowing for the characterization and assessment of sleep periods. Data originating from the watch is downloaded, analyzed and interpreted by sleep specialist professionals. Following this, a report of the data interpretation is sent to the patient upon request and/or respective physicians for treatment purposes and records.
Home Sleep Study
Sleep disorders are most effectively diagnosed with an overnight sleep study in a sleep clinic. As the technology develops, home sleep testing will eventually have the same level of detail as laboratory testing. With this user-friendly self-administered device the patient sets up the recording in the comfort of their own home. A crucial advantage is that you don’t suffer from the "first night effect," an established phenomenon where sleeping in an unfamiliar setting worsens your sleep. The development of this technology particularly stands to benefit children, elderly people, people who are suffering from chronic illness, and those with anxiety about being in a clinic. The data from these home sleep studies is downloaded onto a card which is then sent to the appropriate doctor.
